usb mouse works on 2 ports from 4

hello,

I bought a new usb mouse for my laptop, but it happens something very
strange when I plug it:

on my laptop I have 4 usb ports but the mouse will work only when
plugged on two of them. (the ones on the left side, I am right handed
so it's really uncomfortable)
when I plug the mouse on the other two ports widows tries to load a
driver, but it says it cannot find it... and mouse stays unusable.

I have win xp media center edition + service packs

I tried the mouse on another laptop equal to mine (same model and OS)
and I got the same problem.
I now know that the problem is not of my computer in particular,
caused by some hardware failure or software misconfiguration.

does anyone know how to solve it?

thanx alot
Giulio

What make and model laptop? This info will help.

Have you checked Device Manager to see of the ports are
disabled? Have you read the users' manual?

sorry for the late answer
my laptop is a acer aspire 5684 wlmi

ports work correctly since I normally use them for other devices.
there is no user manual for the mouse. and nothing specific about the
usb ports.

any idea?
