USB mass storage evices not recognized! HELP

the other day i plugged in my usb 2.0 ezternal hdd and started copying
some files off it - no prob. after about 1.5 gig the drive shut off and
then remounted without warning! smelling a rat, i quickly copied all
important stuff off my ext and onto my pc. the next time i plugged it in
it gave me a big fat "usb device not recognized" I know the drive is
fine because it works on other machines, as far as i can tell, the usb
on my mobo is ok as mouse and scanner work fine in ALL ports and drive
works in NONE.

so heres the interesting bit. when i plug in my pendrive i get the same
message, it seems that this error is affecting only mass storage
devices. does anyone have any ideas? thanks.

I have a similar problem, and so does a friend. We have both searched for an
answer. No one appears to recognise it as a problem nevermind having an
answer.

If you have come across any info do post it.
