USB Key Not Recognized

My XPe images can not recognize USB Keys. When I insert the USB Key, nothing
pops up or appears under My Computer. The Removable Storage section is also
missing from Computer Management. I have added the following components
regarding USB so far:

USB Composite Device
USB FloppyDisk Drive
USB Human Interface Device
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Storage Device
USB User Interface
USB Root Hub
FAT
Universal Plug & Play
Universal Plug & Play Device
DiskOnKey USB Personal Storage Device
Generic USB Composite Device
Generic USB Input Device Support

and a few more USB components.. Thanks in advance for any tips.

I'd also add these:

"Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controler"
"Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controler"
"Standard Enhanched PCI to USB Host Controler"

Also, it wouldn't hurt to add "PnP (User Mode)".

Hi KM

Thanks for replying.

I have added those components yet my XPe image still does not recognize USB
Keys. I can however recognize an Aladdin USB Hardlock if I install the
drivers after deploying the image. When I insert a generic USB Key, there
are no pop-ups or no flash drives listed in My Computer. My keyboard and
mouse work fine and they are USB. It's just USB Keys that don't work.

Forgot to mention that I am running XP Embedded w/Service Pack 1. Are there
any USB Component upgrades that I may not have? Thanks.

Gabriel,

Check out the USB nodes under Device Manager and see if the components (drivers) listed earlier are loaded and working correctly.

There were some important changes in the SP2 and FP2007 in USB stack so I'd recommnd you to upgrade to those too.

In USB Controllers in Device Manager it lists:
Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller
USB Composite Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

All the drivers are working correctly according to Device Status. Also I
was unable to find the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controler"
component. My company is in the process of ordering XPe w/SP2 but I figure
if USB storage devices are not working properly in SP1, then there is a good
chance they will not work in SP2.

Hope the EHCI controller is on your hardware board and the appropriate BIOS options enabled it. Did you test the board with XP Pro?
Did USB 2.0 mass storage devices work there?

See if you also got these components included into your image:

"USB Mass Storage Device",
"PnP (User-mode)",
"Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator",
"Standard Enhanched PCI to USB controller".

Lower your min visibility option in TD to 100 to all the components.

I'm not entirely sure what happenned, but it works now. In case anybody is
interested I performed the following steps:

1. I added all the components listed above.
2. I downloaded the .INF files for the Intel embedded motherboard.
3. I imported them into the Component Database Mgr, but did not add them to
my Target Designer configuration
4. I tried to install two updates for XPe (neither of them were sucessful)
Q811279_XPE_SP2_X86_ENU.exe - Security Update
Q822603_XPE_SP2_X86_ENU.EXE - Includes fix for Intel USB Drivers
5. I re-built and deployed my XPe image, and USB now works after days of pain.

Somewhere in there it fixed the issue I was having. I listed the steps just
in case it may help someone down the road.
