USB high speed ports

The Compaq Presario 7000CA I just bought
(literally off the back of a truck) tells me
"No high speed USB ports have been
installed" so transfers via external USB
drive do indeed take much longer than on
my regular 2.8 MHz Win98 PC. Can I do
anything about this?

While it may be new to you it is an older system thus the lack of USB 2.0.
You can purchase a PCI card that supports USB 2.0 and install it. This is
quite inexpensive and should be easy enough to install although I know some
Compaq cases are tricky to get into. Check for a manual here if you don't
have one

1. The dates suggest WinXP software on a Presario (year 2001)
ought already to support USB.v.2 hardware (1999). The HP web site
offers a BIOS update that apparently includes USB speed (well,
the HP search engine flags this item for "USB high speed.")
Presence of front panel USB sockets suggests the hardware is USB.v.2.

2. You are dead right about the bulbous light plastic front
panel on a Compaq Presario 7000CA ! All the HP web site
seems to say is that some cases vary. I have not yet found
any pic that looks like my case (with 3-sided shell secured
by screws only on the bottom, not at the back.)

This is the Compaq with such a bulging front panel as to
tilt the case a few degrees above the horizontal. I should
welcome advice how to remove the front panel.

[3. Xandros = the Debian distro? Earlier this year I added
this to my Win98 PC, generally like it, but am not yet
adept in tar.gz.]

Try here--enter model & it shows how it comes apart. HTH, sdlomi2
