USB Failure

JanT,

OK, good luck to you. I hate to suggest this, but you could also consider
replacing one of those CD/DVD-ROM drives. It would really be a shame if that
move also didn't work, and that' why I hate making that suggestion. But it
is something to consider.

I have no idea how large your registry backup should be. Also, I have no
idea what would happen if you installed it. I'll be checking this thread for
news, but the weekend is now a few day off. This thread will be several
pages back by then.

As far as the System File checker goes, what is important is the message you
received after running the "sfc /scannow" command. Did you get a
message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations",
or did it, instead, report errors? You may or may not see references to
usbstor.inf, etc. in the cbs.log. If that file was okay, then you probably
wouldn't.

I have a hunch that your CD/DVD drive is connected via USB, and that's why
you don't see it in Device Manager. Everything under the USB Controller
will have an Unknown Device or Question Mark.

Check your BIOS. There look for an entry like "USB Emulation" or "USB
Legacy". I don't know much about these settings, so I can't offer you much.
You may want to Google these things in relation to your BIOS make. You
might also try resetting the BIOS to its defaults, if it has that option.

Hi Freddy, will start a new topic when I have tried your suggestion, will
head it USB/CD Failure. You can have a few days off now! Best Wishes.

Hi Dean, just did the scan again and there was no integrity violation. The
CD/DVD drive is not connected via USB, I saw my son in law fitting it and
have the box here in front of me, a Liteon 20X. I will try Freddie's
suggestion at the weekend and if that doesn't work may buy a new CD/DVD
drive, but the drives seem fine, I can open the drawers okay if that is any
indication. Everything seems fine in the BIOS, but might try resetting to
defaults before I remove and the relace the DVD drive. Many thanks to you
and Freddie for your assistance.

Hi Dean, I've chickened out, will wait till my son in law can fix it,
luckily I have a laptop. This could be the problem but I have been using
the USBs and DVD drives for about a month, why should Vista suddenly decide
the drives are not available. I did try Freddie's suggestion of removing the
connections, booting up with them disconnected then replacing them and
rebooting again, still no luck. The BIOS finds the drives with no problem,
when the black screen starts with all the info the drives are listed, it is
just Vista that cannot see them. Thanks for your assistance.

Would just like to thank Freddie and Dean for their assistance. My son in
law took it to pieces at the weekend and reassembled, still no joy, he
couldn't make it out as he had built it. Anyway gave in, reformatted and
reinstalled Vista and everything working okay now.
