USB & eSATA Not working on WinXP Pro

Lately I cannot get my USB and eSATA working correctly on my WinXP Pro
system. A couple of months ago everything was OK but now when I plug a USB
device in the system does not see it. In the past when I plugged in a US
device I'd hear a notification sound, a window would pop up telling me that
a USB device had been found, drivers would be installed and then I could
access the device. Now when I plug in a USB device nothing happens.

I have a similar issue with my eSATA port as well.

I've downloaded and installed all the updates from Microsoft.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't use Microsoft to update device drivers.
Go to your PC manufactures or motherboard mfg.
web site and download/install the latest drivers.

Unless your eSATA controller is set to AHCI (RAID) you cannot
hot plug an eSATA drive. The default in most MB BIOS's and
auxiliary SATA controllers is IDE compatibility. If this is the case,
you can plug in the eSATA drive, but will need to reboot before XP
sees it. The same will apply when you remove it. An eSATA drive
is actually an internal drive that's attached to the system differently.
