My LG LS50a no longer recognises plug and play hardware inserted in the USB
ports, and keeps trying to tell me that I have an infra-red port (which
doesn't exist). Can anybody help me on what to do to fix this.

I would at first remove all unused USB devices from the Device
Manager. Also check the hidden ones: "Device Manager Does Not Display
Devices That Are Not Connected to the Windows XP-Based Computer"
