usb drive shows EXCLAMATION mark in device manager - usb mass storage - USBSTOR.sys

Hi,

XP pro machine for 1 year has managed to detect my IOMEGA USB external hard
drive (i have a dell 4100 win standard usb 1.0 integrated with the
mainboard).

This week however when connecting the usb drive it now shows a YELLOW
EXCLAMATION MARK in device manager against the USB MASS STORAGE device
drive.

This has now happened on 3 dell machines running ether XP pro / home or win
2k. exactly the same problem.

However some machine are quite happy to detect the drive (again dells
running ether xp pro or win2k and all usb 1 integrated with mainboard).

Im not using usb expansion pci cards, im simply plugging drive into standard
usb port and unplugging it using the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE option.

Does anyone know how to sort this problem ?

i have tried:
- windows update to detect a new driver
- deleting USBSTOR.sys from c:\windows\system32\drivers.

Can someone please help ? this is driving me crazy now its happened on 3
machines and i cant find a fix. Once again the usb drive is fine when
plugging into other dell machines. Is there something im doing to cause
this driver corruption ?

Thanks for any help
Scott

Were any updates recently made to these 3 machines but not to
the other's? Are other USB devices having the same problem when
plugged into these 3 machines?
