USB DEVICES NOT SHOWN IN EXPLORER

I am running XP home edition and have also installed SP2. When connecting an
USB device it is shown to be detected but is not available. A flashdrive for
example is shown to be available but not shown in explorer. The system also
does not automatically assign a drive letter to the flash drive. Anything I
can do to remedy?

I assume a flash drive needs to be partitioned and formatted like a
hard disk, otherwise the OS won't see a disk at all.

I am having the same problem with a USB hard drive. Yes the hard drive is
partitioned and data stored on the hard drive. The drive doesn't show up.
XP Pro with latest updates.
