USB device recognized but no drive letter assigned

Hi, my Windows XP SP2 recognizes my USB thumb drive, but does not
assign a drive letter to it. When I go to disk management, the device
shows up. However, when I manually assign a drive letter to it, the
drive still does not show up in Windows explorer. If I assign a
different drive letter, it still does not show up, but now the original
drive letter I assigned is not available. Help.
