USB device not detected - game pad

Any insight into my problem from those with far more computer
knowledge than I would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell PC with the following characteristics:
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.70GHz
Processor Speed 1.65 GHz
Memory (RAM) 256 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Operating System Version 5.1.2600
Most of the windows updates have been installed including the service
packs.

I have four USB 1 ports. Two on the back of the computer and two on
the front face. I recently bought a Gemini Industies Game Pad (Axis
Pad FX) but it was not detected when I plugged it in one of the front
USB ports. The back two ports were filled with cables from my printer
and my scanner both of which were working fine. I removed the printer
from the back USB port and plugged the game pad in the back usb port
and it was instantly detected and works fine. I was beginning to think
the problem was a hardware problem with the two front USB
ports;however, I plugged the printer cable into one of the Front USB
ports and it was instantly recognized and worked fine.So I tried the
gamepad in the front again, again with no success.

Of note I did try to connect a palm Vx hotsynch cable through one of
the front USb ports about two months ago and could not get it to work.
(I thought it was a problem with the driver.) So I connected the palm
via the old fashioned serial cable to hotsynch.I wonder if the palm
usb cable would work from one of the back ports?

Anyone have any ideas on why the back two ports work fine with both
the game pad and the printer, but the front only recognizes the
printer? The printer and scanner both have their own power supplies
whereas the gamepad and palm cable both get power from the usb, would
this be the difference? It does not make sense, but I make no claims
of computer literacy.

I have checked the BIOS and USB is enabled.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered but I searched some
last night and could not find a solution.

Thanks

Wow, you sure crossposted. Call Dell and ask them. One of my
computers is a Dell and they did not connect the front two ports. You
need a cable
to run from the M/B to those ports. They sent me a cable and that fixed
it. If you open the case you would see if a cable is connected to them,
thats what I did. And if you don't want to get flamed, knock off
multiple posting. Most people will not answer you. :)

I looked inside the computer and the back two USB ports are directly
on the motherboard and the front two are connected by wires; however,
I did not see any obvious loose or bad connections.

I think the power is Ok because the USB cable that I have to hotsynch
my palm
pilot with will also charge the palm pilot. So I got it out and tried
to connect the USB-PDA cable again. I did get windows to recognize
that I had connected a new piece of hardware but I could not get it to
work any further than that; although it would charge the palm;
therefore power is at least flowing out to charge the palm. I believe
the problem with the USB-PDA cable is an obsoletedriver and I have not
found one yet to work with windows XP. I just do not understand why
the game pad is not even recognized as being plugged in when put in
one of the front USB.

THanks, if anyone has any other thoughts, I am open to most all
suggestion.

I must have found the right driver because now I can ge the USB - PDA
cable not only to be recognized but to actually Hotsynch the palm from
the front USB. The driver program I believe actually configures the
USB to act as a serial port because in the device manager the USB -
PDA is found under the Ports (COM and LPT) heading and not the USB
heading.

Now if I could only get the game pad to work from the other front USB
port???
