USB Device Error

I have a client who is getting a strange error with a USB
device plugged into the onboard USB ports on a Windows
2000 Server that was working previously. The timing of
the failure indicates there may be a relation to the last
set of Windows Updates that were automatically downloaded
last week by the server, but I am not sure if this is
really the cause of the problem.

The device in question is the USB cradle for a Sony Clie,
but the error is occurring with any other device that I
attach to the USB ports on the server as well.

I went into Device Manager and deleted all entries under
Universal Serial Bus Controllers. When I restart the
server, it finds the PCI to USB Host controller and USB
Root Hub just fine, but fails on any USB Device plugged in
that it tries to load. The error message that is
generated for every device is "An error occurred during
the installation of the device. The installation failed
because a function driver was not specified for this
device instance." The driver that is trying to be loaded
is usb.inf from the .inf subfolder in the Windows
directory. (C:\Windows\INF.)

The system is loaded with Service Pack 4 and is up-to-date
for Windows Updates. Attempts to find a new USB driver to
try did not work, but I did use the one in
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386 and got the same result.

I checked the Microsoft Support Website for the
entry "function driver was not specified" and no matches
were found for the exact wording. Several are found if
you change the search options to a less restrictive
search, but I could find nothing that is relevant to this
configuration/issue.

I am going onsite again Monday to try to see if an
external USB Hard Drives with DOS-level drivers can be
detected on the server if I use a Windows 98 Boot Disk.
If the external USB drive is found with this approach, I
can eliminate a hardware problem with the USB ports on the
server. If it is not found, I will have the server
manuafacturer send a new motherboard out for the server.

Does anyone else out there have any ideas I can try?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
