i have a TTUSB usb turntable. it should work out of the box without
requiring a driver however whne i plug it in, the new hardware wizard
starts and asks for a driver for a "USB AUDIO CODEC". i can't find
this driver. Apparently this is supposed to be built into windows. The
machine is a dell demension with a SoundMax sound card. It is running
Win xp Home 2002 with sp2, direct x 9c and all the latest chipset /
soundcard drivers from dell. Has anyone had any similar problems or
know what to do? i am stuck!!

No no no. Audacity has nothing to do with the turntable. It is just
recording software. The USB turntable uses a built in feature of XP
that seems to be missing from my PC. The thing works on other
computers. The USB AUDIO CODEC is also used by webcams and other usb
devices. I am missing it. Does anyone know how i can get it without
reinstalling windows!?

Reinstalling Windows, be serious.
When you first connect the turntable, Windows XP (and Mac OSX) will often
select the "USB Audio Codec" as the audio input and output for your entire
system. Since your turntable does not have speakers, audio will not be heard
from your programs until you tell Windows not to use the turntable as an
output device. Here’s how to change these settings so that your internal
sound card will always be used for playback whether or not your TTUSB is
connected via USB:

For Windows:
On the bottom left of your screen, select the "Start" menu.
Select "Settings" then "Control Panel".
In the window that opens, select the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon. (If
you don’t see a choice called "Sounds and Audio Devices," choose the "Switch
to Classic View" option in the panel on the left of the window, and the
"Sounds and Audio Devices" icon should become available in the list on the
left.
Select the "Audio" Tab at the top of the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control
panel window.
Under "Sound Playback," choose your internal sound card as the default
device. This varies by computer but should not be set to "USB Audio Codec" or
"Microsoft Sound Mapper".
Under "Sound Recording," select "USB Audio Codec" for your default device.
Check the box titled "Use only default devices".
Click "Apply"...then "OK".
Hope this helps.

i understand that perfectly, i understand the concept of two audio
devices, one without speakers. What you are not understanding is that
the USB AUDIO CODEC is not installing in device manager i get a yellow
icon with an exclamation mark which if you look at the properties says
that there is no driver for the device. Trying to find the driver with
the hardware wizard leads to windows not finding the driver and the
device not working. Looking on Google for the driver leads to not
finding it. Re installing audacity leads to not finding it. Without
the USB AUDIO CODEC installed successfully, the turntable can't
function as a input device. it isn't a device on the computer at all!
It won't show up in sound settings or in audacity!! This driver is
supposed to be built into windows xp home and pro but it isn't on
mine. Will i have to reinstall to find it? or does anyone know where i
can get it?

In a way you've answered your own question (problem). Your situation
has zilch (nothing) to do with WindowsXP, it is a soundcard problem
which has built-in codecs. Plectrum answered that on the 19th that it
probably is a hardware problem. You can shop at eBay, or maybe borrow
a friends, soundcard and try that.
More info:
After connecting the USB cable of the turntable to the computer, set up
Audacity by going to the Audio I/O tab of Preferences and:
Do not choose "Microsoft SoundMapper" if you are on Windows.
Enable "software playthrough" if you want to hear the turntable through the
computer speakers while it's recording.
Set recording channels to "2 (stereo)" if you want to record in stereo,
otherwise leave recording channels set to "1 (mono)".
Go to the Mixer Toolbar and turn up the left-hand output volume slider (by
the speaker symbol). The right-hand input volume slider (by the microphone
symbol) does not function with USB turntables. It is not possible to vary
either the input level into Audacity (or the output level of the turntable)
for the purpose of making the recording. If you are on a Mac, you should also
click on the Mac hard disk, then Applications > Utilities > Audio-MIDI Setup.
Click on the Audio Devices tab, then on the left-hand side, select "USB Audio
CODEC" in the "Default Input" and "Properties for" dropdowns.
Then, ignoring any instructions in the manufacturer's guide to select
"stereo mix", simply press the red Record button in Audacity to start
recording from the turntable.
If you are not able to do any of the above, you need a new soundcard.

Charlie,

I was having the exact same problems you were. Except in my case it was with
a USB Microphone. And, like you I didn't really want to re-install windows to
get my mic to work. After doing some searching, I came across a USB Audio
ASIO driver . Once installed, my mic worked perfectly. Chances are it will
work in your case as well.
