usb 2 device not recognized problem

david

dear all,

I have XP Pro, with on board usb ports that supports usb 2. I know it
support usb 2 because all my usb 1.1 and 2 devices all work happily.

few week ago, I believe it's after a windows update, my usb 2 card
reader (to read memory stick, CF card etc.) doesn't work anymore when
I plug it into the system. an unknown device show up in device
manager.

the hint: in device manager, all the hubs shows up ok, including one
that said enhanced usb controller. when I uninstall that device,
magically, the system now recognize my usb card reader, except to
prompt me with a message that said I am plugging a usb2 device into a
usb 1 port. I can use the device. However, when I tell windows to
find new hardware, it will find the enhanced usb controller and then
install it, but in the process, my card reader will immediate become
an unknown device again.

so my device work, the port work (when the enhanced hub is uninstalled
from device manager), but obviously I can't do this all the time. I
have done all the normal fixes, such as uninstalling / deleting all
the root hubs and controllers and letting windows find them again...
it does, after I reboot, windows will find all the hubs and
controllers back, even the enhanced controller and install them.

one more question, I see the root hubs, but none of them say enhanced
root hub like the "enhanced' controller, does that matter?

please help, this has been bugging me for a few weeks and no solution
depite searching up and down through all the news group post.

thanks in advanced

david

Hi

First, use the safely remove icon to remove the card reader and than disconnect it from the root hub
Disconnect all other USB devices from the root hubs, if any
Boot in safe mode and logon as administrator, go to device manager and uninstall the USB Open Host Controller as well a
the USB enhanced Host Controller
Reboot and let windows search and reinstall the USB drivers. (assumming you have installed SP1
Reconnect the USB devices one at each time and check that it is working properly before connecting other USB devices
Make sure that USB 1.1 devices are connected to USB 1.1 hub and USB 2.0 devices are connected to USB 2.0 Hubs

Note: except for the USB mouse and keyboard, always use the safely remove icon to remove the USB devices before unplug them from the USB hubs

Some motherboard would show USB 2.0 root hubs (in device manager) if the USB Enhanced host Controller drivers are installed properly
However, it would not affect the performance if it only showed USB root hubs in device manager
Pls refer to the mobo manual or User manual which ports are USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 in the front/back panel
