I upgraded to Vista last night and have lost my USB 2.0, all USB now is
showing as USB1.1. Is this a bug and is there a fix?. Also, and I will list
this seperately, my Philips DVD8801 stopped working after I recieved updates.
error39. Anyone came across this problem?

Thank you for your reply. I take it you mean update the bios. I cannot do
this yet as I cannot get my DVD drive to operate. I will try and see if it
possible to add a second cd drive I have and thereby update the Bios to a
Vista one.
You have pointed me in the right direction I hope.
Thanks again.

Leave your BIOS alone! Go into Device Manager, and see if there is a question
mark against USB controllors. If there is, right click on them, select
properties, and install updated driver to run USB 2.0

In your reference to USB 2.0 do you mean your devices which had been USB 2.0
are now reporting as 1.1. If yes, you may need to update the drivers for
those specific devices, check the hardware manufacturer websites for the
latest Vista compatible drivers. If your USB 2.0 connections were added,
you may need to visit those device manufacturers as well.

The chipset drivers aren't necessarily BIOS updates. Your motherboard may
have software that updates its ability to communicate with various
information though it won't be called that. Intel has chipset updates for
their motherboards that help address this, though, sometimes an issue such as
can require BIOS update. You'd have to check your motherboard
manufacturer's website these types of updates and see if they are described
as addressing this issue.

As to your DVD drive and error 39, check out the following Knowledge Base
article under manually delete registry entries:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

The article doesn't mention Vista but this fix has been working for others
with this issue.

"Thank you one and all for your advice. I am not at my machine at the moment
(replying from work) but will try your advice tomorrow. I will post the
success or otherwise of your fixes so others reading this post will know what
worked.

I will leave the bios alone!

When I mentioned USB2.0 reportiong it was not available it was when plugging
in devices and getting the message "this dec=vice would operate better if
plugged into USB2.0 , click for a list of available sockets", so it may be I
do need to update each devices drivers and don't have a problem with the
sockets. If I don't find this to be the solution I will post a new topic with
more details.

Thanks again

For DVD/CD drive not showing in Vista it is a reg edit issue. However to
date microsoft have not released instruction on this. I contact my vendor and
they were able to talk me through the process, it is complicated by the fact
Microsoft will not answer questions on OEM copies of Vista and that each
manufacturer can and does modify their own OEM software.

I would advise
1. Contact your vendor if your Vista serial number has OEM in it
or
2. Contact Microsoft phone service if you are within your 90 day free
helpline use.
or
3. Wait until someone more competent than me post the regedit to delete the
upper and lower values for the drive affected.

re USB2.0 I am told this is a software issue and I have to pay £1.50 an
minute ($3.00 a minute) to resolve it. I will wait for a free fix to
appear.!!!

I was having problems with USB 2.0 , sound card reloading drivers etc.
Problems all resolved with updating bios to VISTA version. DO NOT USE XP
UPDATE IT MAY BE FAULTY.
HOWEVER
Once Bios was updated I was prompted to re-vaildate my copy of VISTA. This
odes not happen automatically. I had 45 minutes onto Support from Microsoft.
I am UK was passed to validation in USA passed to Support in USA, passed back
to UK and had UK support finally validate me by them phoning telephone
validation service!!! THANK GOODNESS FOR TOLL FREE SUPPORT.

UPDATE YOUR BIOS BUT YOU WILL PROBALLY HAVE TO VALIDATE VIA SUPPORT> GOOD
LUCK
