USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 upgrade

I will not lie,I am confused now.I was thinking that by installing a 2port
USB 2.0 adapter card into my Pavilion xt 963 desktop's available PCI slot
that I could achieve USB 2.0 speeds. System requirements for this card are at
least 266MHz. Processor speed or faster. (I have 1202MHz.) I meet all the
other requirements and I know there may be installation issues as I have
installed and uninstalled this card time and again.Asking for help through
H.P.'s tech support they seem to be telling me that I can not attain 2.0
speed. What are these cards used for then? Why are they sold as "Up Grades"?
Please explain. I have also service pack 2 installed

Certainly an add-in USB 2.0 card will give you 2.0 speeds. However, you
haven't told us what happens and what the actual problem is. Please include
the actual text of any error messages, how you are installing the card, and
its make/model. Does the card show up in Device Manager?

Well, the real skinny is this....After installation the new card (Adaptec AUA-2000)is recognized by the Found New hardware wizard. The manufacturer states that it will work w/either Microsoft or Vendor software. I choose to go w/ microsoft since it came imbeded W/ service Pack2 and shows up as enhaced some thing or other in DeVice manager. Pluging in peripherals by direction one at a time is the recomendation of manufacturer. As soon as one device is installed Everything freezes up! I install the card in an empty PCI slot turn on computer, check device manager, connect into new port and then FREEZE!

Uninstall the adapter. Turn off the computer, unplug it, and remove the
adapter from its current PCI slot. Install in a different PCI slot. Turn on
the computer and install using the drivers that came with the card.

If this doesn't work, you have a hardware issue. Start troubleshooting by
contacting 1) Adaptec's tech support; 2) HP's tech support.

Quoting your post produces a very weird reply. Here's what you said:

Try a different usb PCI add-in card. A quick look at NewEgg shows me that
you can get a different brand card for $10-20 USD so this is completely
doable.

You would only have USB 2.0 speed on the ports from the new
card. The old USB 1.1 ports from the mobo, will remain at
1.1 speed. You will need to install the proper drivers for
the USB 2.0, which means XP SP1 or SP2. Install the new
card, disable the onboard USB hardware by uninstalling it,
when you reboot, the new card should be detected and the USB
2.0 drivers installed, they will run both the card and the
mobo.

If you only have the 2 ports on the card, you may want to
get an external powered hub for more ports. Run your
keyboard and mouse from the 1.1, they are slow devices, save
the 2.0 for hardware that can use the extra speed.

Follow the directions with the card if what I said above is
not exactly correct.

Interesting. I have another USB problem. The USB 2.0 PCI card I
installed works fine. I have a Samsung laser printer which I plugged
into the new card. Works fine, until I reboot. Then blue screen at
startup. Unplug the printer at startup, then plug it in, everything's
good. No problem with the startup and printer connected to the original
USB 1.1 ports that came on the motherboard. Think your method might fix
that?

I don't know, you can look for answers or just try it.
