Usage Reports - or the lack of them...

I host a website from a server I own. The server OS with Server 2003.
FrontPage extensions are loaded and running. I've configured the server to
log activity weekly and for the past two weeks, the server has been kicking
out log files every Saturday night.

When I go View|Reports|Usage|Weekly - I get a white screen with the
following text "There is no usage data available for this web site, because
it has not been published to a server that supports usage analysis.

As best I can tell from the numerous tech notes, my server is properly
setup. On the client side I'm told to go to Tools|Server to configure the
FrontPage client but that selection is "grayed out" and unavailable.

I checked Tools|Page Options on the Authoring tab and "Complete" is selected
under "FrontPage and SharePoint Technologies:"

How can I get usage reporting to work???

Cause

=========

1. Version 5012 of FrontPage Server Extensions that ship with
Windows 2003 is optimized for IIS 6.0.



2. Usage Analysis is not available on this version. Usage analysis
uses OWSTimer which has been yanked out of Windows 2003. In other words
Usage analysis will only work through the command prompt and not through the
admin pages.



Resolution

1. The Command to run Usage is



owsadm.exe -o usage -p lm/w3svc/# where # is the instance number you wish
to run usage against. The Owsadm.exe is located in the C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50\bin folder.
This command can be scheduled using the windows task scheduler if you want
to run it on a regular basis.



2. The W3SVC# of a web site can be obtained by doing the following
steps

a. Open IIS Manager and click on the web sites.

b. Right click on any one of your virtual site and select properties

c. Click on the Web site Tab and Click on the Properties button in
the Logging portion.

d. The W3SVC# is displayed in the bottom of the resulting window.
