US Robotics 56k USB Faxmodem

Hey all-

I purchased an external US Robotics 56k USB Faxmodem for
my Dell Optiplex SX270 and am having substansial problems
getting it to run.

The modem works fine on my Dell Dimension 8200 running
Windows XP Pro. But when I attempt to run the same
modem/phone cord/jack/software/drivers on the Optiplex
which is also running Windows XP Pro (a clean install) it
acts like it is trying to make the handshake before giving
3 long beeps, drops the connection and then a rapid busy
signal.

I have tried everything I can think of from the fresh
install, to searching for better drivers/firmware, to
ensuring the USB port actually works nothing I do seems to
make a difference.

The only other thing I've tried is connecting through
Hyper Terminal where it gives me a 'No carrier signal'
Dell says it has to be a software problem... anyone have
any ideas?

Thanks a bunch,

Sarah

Have you looked at the device manager for the USB ports on
each machine to see what difference there is in the drivers?
Also see how the modem shows up in device manager.

Do both computers have SP1 and all updates installed? Is
the Windows interface to the modem set to wait for dial
tone, etc., you'll have to look at the modem properties for
each computer.

Per your suggestion I just looked at every setting
including the com ports, usb ports, dialer and the modem
itself they are all exactly identical down to the last
driver.. with the exception of some hex numbers but thats
for obvious reasons.... yes all updates and service packs
are installed.. and it is set to wait for tone on both.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Sarah

Is your modem powered by the USB port?

I have the same issue with my dell optiplex w/ windows xp - or rather when I
leave the telephone line plugged in, anyone trying to call my number (when
I'm not on the computer) gets two ring tones and then it goes to busy - if I
don't pick up during the half a ring I hear the call is dropped (or rather
I'm not able to take the call and I get a dial tone). The only way I can get
around this is to unplug my phone line while I'm not connected to the
Internet. Outgoing calls are fine. I've upgraded my modem driver, but the
issue persists. help!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Darby
