upload wps file

I am new to Vista and the other day I used a Microsoft Works Word Processor
template to help create a resume but I keep running into, what I believe, is
the same problem. I sent the file as an attachment to my internet e-mail
account so that I could print several copies at work (shhh...I know thats
stealing) but I was unable to because when I downloaded the file at work all
I get is weird text that means nothing to me and probably to anyone else. so
I figured it was bad karma or mojo and gave up. then later on while surfing
the internet for jobs I tried to upload my .wps file (my resume) to several
different websites but all I get is error messages from the websites...one
example is:

-- The format of the file that you want to attach is not supported.
The supported file formats are: Word (.doc)

Text (.txt)

Rich Text Format (.rtf)

Portable Document Format (.pdf)

Hypertext Markup Language (.html, .htm)

now what am I supposed to do. I tried to download a file that would
"convert" the .wps file to an acceptable version, but my ignorance of the
whole process keeps getting in the way. basically it did not work. can you
help me please. I'm sure I need to download some sort of file converter but
I am clueless as to which one.

Yup, believe it or not, Microsoft's Works word processor is not directly
compatible with Microsoft's Word word processor.
It's been a long time since I used Works, so I'm not sure, but you might
want to see if Works gives you an option to save a file as a Word document
(like Word for Windows 95) or a .rtf file.

Hi Charles,

If you have Microsoft Word installed on a machine at work, you can probably
use it to open your Works wps file, and then save it as a Word DOC or RTF
file:

Run Word
Go to File, Open,
In Word 2003 look for the "Type of File" drop-down list
In Word 2007, look for the drop down-list headed "All word documents"
In either case, cllick on the list and look for Works *.wps, at the bottom
of the list.
Select teh Works option.
Now, browse to where you have stored your *.wps file and open it.

Your document should open normally, in Word.

Now, just save it as a Word Document. In Word, go to File, Save as.

In Word 2003 select "Word Document" from the "Save as Type" drop-down list
In Word 2007, choose Word 97-2003, from the list of displayed options.
Click Okay to save,

You should now have a new file, with the same filename but a "*.DOC"
extension. This new file is suitable to upload to job sites, etc.

Microsoft Work's own native word-processing format, *.wps, is pretty rare,
and is not well supported by other applications. You can avoid the problem
in Works, by saving ocuments in RTF ("Rich Text Format") format, if you want
to send them to other users. RTF is a universal format for exchanging
documents between applications on many different platforms. In Works, just
go File, Save As, and choose RTF.
