Upgrading Win98 to Winxp Pro

T

Tetonlady

Here is my scenario-

I have ghosted an old win98 machine HD (IDE) to a new machine (SATA)
and want to upgrade to winxp. After ghosting the old hard-drive to
the new hard-drive, win98 will not see the SATA Controller. No matter
what I do. Also, the CD Rom is not functional because of the IDE /
SATA controller issue. Here is my thought. Loading the CD ROM
drivers thru the Autoexec.bat and config.sys at bootup.
Unfortunately, I do not remember how to do this. Does anyone have any
suggestions for me?

Thanks for your help.

I would look at this in a different light. See if you can format the image off
the Sata drive,I am still wondering how you got it on in the first place .I
assume you have an "upgrade" version of XP and need 98 as verification.Make sure
you copy your SATA drivers from your MOBO CD to a floppy
Install the old HD into the new machine as master or slave on an Eide
channel, leave the SATA drive hooked up.
In the BIOS change the boot order to CD 1st and SATA 2nd
Start with the XP CD in place and pick new installation, when it asks for
verification point it to the old HD that you installed.Pick the SATA drive as
the drive to install to(HD-0) when it asks if you are installing onto a SSCI or
RAID say yes and push F6....insert your floppy that has the SATA drivers on it
..XP will only look for these on the floppy drive nowhere else.If you wish you
can format the drive as NTFS .
The rest just follows the normal XP installation.

This should place the XP installation on the "C" (SATA) drive and you can do
whatever you want with the old drive...put it back in the old machine or use it
as a 2nd HD on the new machine.
