Upgrading Win 98 to Win 2000 in a system that is already dual boot

System is already Win 98/Win 2000/Win 2000 multiboot
Win 98 is on C.
Win 2000 is on F
Another Win 2000 is on G

Jim Boyce's very useful Windows 2000 Quick Fixes (ISBN: 0-596-00017-0) gives
as procedure for cloning Win 98 and adding Win 2000, See pages 12-14,

In effect, you make a copy of C:\Windows in C:\Win 98.
Boot to C:\Win98, make registry changes.
Boot to C:\Windows and install Win 2000 over C:\Windows.

Alas, the Win 2000 CD would not let me upgrade because I already had
multiple operating systems installed.
Surely, there's a way to do this?

What's the best way?

I was thinking of renaming boot.ini, or modifying it to have just Win 98.
Would that work?

Would I lose the NTLDR?
If so, how to recover NTLDR, etc.?

I do not wish to do a clean Win 2000 install, I want to preserve the Win 98
apps and settings.

A "Resolution" of my question is proposed in MSFT KB article 232123, i.e.,
remove Ntldr, ntdetect.com, boot.ini and the directory for each of the other
OSes.

That seemed rather drastic, so I tried just removing NTLDR, NTDETECT.com and
boot.ini.
Error was NTLDR not found.
I had to put back NTLDR and NTDEtect.com.
I also modified boot.ini so it included only the Win 98 on C.
The currently installed Win 2000 are on F and G, and I moved the clone of
Win 98 to M.

Well, this was enough to fool the Win 2000 upgrade CD to start the process.
It created the Upgrade report and then informed me that I could not install
the upgrade because there was more than 1 OS.

Does this mean that the only way I will be able to get rid of Win 98 on C is
to do a clean install of Win 2000, say, on C, then, if I choose, delete the
C:\Windows directory and remove it from boot.ini, then re-install everything
on C? There should be a better way.
