Hello;

I have Win XP Home edition on my laptop. I would like to upgrade to Win XP
Professional. Is this doable? Are there any problems I should anticipate?

Thanks

I think I'm OK except I dont have an upgrade CD of XP, I have a new install

First, backup any files you can't afford to lose. While the
upgrade from Home to Pro should go smoothly, you have to
prepare for the possibility that something could go wrong.

Next, your XP Pro Upgrade CD should be at the same service pack
level as your XP Home installation. If you have an older
upgrade CD you can slipstream SP2 into the installation files.
Here are some articles that you may find helpful.

Finally, if someone by the name of Andrew E respond to your
question, do your best to ignore him. He has a habit of posting
incoherent nonsense about not being able to upgrade from XP
Home to XP Pro.

Good luck

It depends. If your XP Pro CD is the full "retail" version,
meaning it came in a blue box with the CD key on a folder, then
you will be able to use it to do an upgrade. If your XP Pro CD
is an OEM version, meaning the CD key came on a sticker which
will be affixed to the computer, then you won't be able to
perform an upgrade. The OEM version of XP Pro can only perform
a clean installation.

Just out of curiosity, why are you upgrading from Home to Pro?
Unless you need to join a domain, there are few differences
between Home and Pro.
