upgrading to XP pro

B

Bill H.

Have a winxp home ed with media center (new computer, e-machine).

Today bought win xp pro upgrade and tried to install since we need a web
server to use with Front Page and apparently home ed does not have PWS nor
IIS. :-(

Keep getting "invalid product key." Even tried in diagnostic mode.

Am getting conflicting information. Help in media center says I can
upgrade, Microsoft seems to think that media center edition is "above" xp
pro, and e-machine tech support suggests to f-disk the drive.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

An upgrade from Windows Media Center Edition to
Windows XP Professional is unsupported. You'll
need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP
Professional and perform a "Clean Install".

Please note that you may also use the
Upgrade Version of Windows XP Pro
to perform a clean install, as long as
you have an old Microsoft Windows
98 or 2000 CD to qualify with.

That's not possible; there's no such version of WinXP. WinXP MCE is a
super-set of WinXP Pro. If you have WinXP Home, than you *do not* have
Media Center Edition. If you have WinXP MCE, then you do not have WinXP
Home. What does it state that you purchased on the invoice? Click
Start > Run and type in "Winver" and press <Enter>. What version of
Windows is actually installed on the computer?

Transitioning from WinXP MCE to WinXP Pro is a _downgrade_.

WinXP Media Center Edition is a _superset_ (iow, it does
_everything_ WinXP Pro can do (except join a domain), plus contains
additional multi-media features) of WinXP Pro.

As you've an OEM (factory-built computer with a factory installed OS,
the sole source of support available to you is eMachines.

On second thought, it would be better to purchase and
install a second hard drive as a slave to the master drive.
Then you can install Windows XP Pro on the slave drive and
have a dual-boot configuration with Windows Media
Center Edition.
