Upgrading to windows XP problems...

I tried upgrading to windows 2000 from windows ME, and it will not complete
the upgrade.
When it gets to "Updating(Or was it upgrading?) system files and programs",
it gets about halfway then restarts the computer. Is there any way to fix
this?
I also tried to convert the file system to NTFS.
I was trying to upgrade to windows 2000 Pro.
Thanks for any help.

There is no upgrade path from Windows ME to
Windows 2000. You will have to upgrade to XP
Home or XP Pro.

If you upgraded to ME from 98 and saved the
configuration, you may be able to restore 98 and
do the upgrade to 2000 that way. But I'm not
sure I want to recommend that.

I tried to cancel the upgrade to windows 2000 and upgrade to Windows XP, but
it said some file was missing. If it weren't for that, I would have canceled
the upgrade and would be using windows XP by now.
Is there any way to get the files off of the drive then just format it?
Thank you.

You're seeing this because it's not technically possible to
perform an upgrade from WinMe to Win2K, as WinMe is the newer OS. You
should have backed up your data and started with a clean hard drive.

Windows Me to Windows 2000 Upgrade Is Not Supported
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;272627.

At this point, you can eliminate the boot-up option menu by simply
editing C:\Boot.ini, but you won't have a stable installation until
you completely remove all traces of WinMe by formatting the hard drive
and starting over.

I'd suggest reinstalling WinME which will repair your
configuation. You can then get files saved before
reinstalling.

The alternative is to install a clean Win2K (NOT
an upgrade) as a dual boot, which allows you to
access your files from either O/S as long as you keep
the partition formatted as FAT32. If you convert to
NTFS, WinME will no longer be useable.

You can also install XP clean as a dual-boot. But XP
OEM CDs do not have this capability.
