Upgrading to Vista?

N

Nigel Molesworth

In PC Pro magazine this month, they suggest that a cheap way to
upgrade to Vista is to buy a copy of Microsoft OEM Windows XP Media
Centre 2005 Edition that comes with a free voucher to upgrade.

Does anyone know if the voucher will be valid if this item is
purchased after Vista is released? Or do I have to buy it now?

The best thing to do to make sure you get a copy is take a trip to Malaysia.
That way you will assured to have a genuine product and a nice vacation
also.

Why bother with the voucher at all? Why not just wait a couple of weeks and
order Vista Home Premium OEM? The offer of XP OEM with a voucher is just a
way of selling items today instead of in two weeks. Besides, your upgrade
will not ship until four to six weeks after Jan 30 (which means it won't
ship until March) and you can get Vista OEM shipped shortly after Jan 30 and
have it in early Feb. This is just a deal to keep the revenue stream going
for the resellers. It is no prize for the buyer because it is not a way of
getting Vista sooner. In fact quite the opposite. The prices will be
comparable. All you would be getting today is a dead-end XP and no Vista
for a couple of months.

That would be perfect! I didn't know it would be available.

Where can I buy this from? UK and US vendors would be handy.

Can't help with US but from a previous post of mine:

For information, Aria are now taking advance orders for all flavours of
Vista (including Business).

See http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Category=45&SubCat=SOF-OS

Prices look to be surprisingly reasonable, less than I expected.

I have no interest in Aria, other than being a long-term customer of
theirs.

Since it can't ship until Jan 30 anyway, just wait and you will see it
showing up on NewEgg and other sites over the next two weeks.
