Upgrading Old Xp pro to a newer Xp Pro

Hi there,

I am trying to install a newer version of XP pro over a older version
of XP Pro (sp2 installed).

I was getting the error message 'the version you have installed is
newer etc' so i made a slipstreamed version of the older xp cc using
nlite, i intergrated it with SP2 . I then uninstalled the sp2 on my pc.

Once i tried to run my slipstreamed cd and install a upgrade version
rather than a fresh-wipe-your-computer version, it would not allow me
to upgrade only to do a fresh install.

The Old Xp Cd was distributed with a new pc so im guessing this is why
its not working?

is there a work around or a solution?

Thanks in advance guys

Muggz

Why? What are you trying to accomplish? And most important, *how* are you
trying to do this?

Are you trying to do a Repair Installation or are you trying to upgrade XP
Professional to XP Professional. You can do the former but not the latter.

If a Repair Installation is what you want (but again, I ask why?), read
here: "How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"

You didn't answer my question. Why? Tell us what you're trying to
accomplish. Whatever it is, you're almost certainly going about it
incorrectly, but if you explain yourself, we can probably help you and tell
you the correct way to do what you want to get done.

And please, quote the message you're responding to, as I did here.

ok well i purchased a computer off ebay that had a pirate copy of
windows xp on it with SP2, which means i cant do windows updates etc.

I have a windows xp pro cd from my other computer (now broken) which is
fully legal.

And i cant put my old XP version onto the pc without deleting
everything because its not allowing me to upgrade.

If your old XP copy won't do an upgrade, it's an OEM version. Probably the
biggest disadvantage o an OEM version is that its license ties it
permanently to the first computer it's installed on. It can never legally be
moved to another computer, sold, or given away by itself.

I'd wipe the drive and start fresh anyway. You never know what's on it.

If your XP CD is OEM you cannot do this according to the EULA.

Excellent advice. If I bought a used computer, the first thing I would do
with it would be to reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea
how the computer has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly,
what is missing, what viruses and spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want
to live with somebody else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddie
porn, etc., and I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

I would do that even if I bought the computer from a close friend or
relative, but I would be *especially* sure to do it if I bought it on eBay.
