Upgrading from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003

Hi,

Someone might have ask this before and I am sorry for asking this again.

I have a Windows 2000 server SP2. It is an old machine and we would like it
to be replaced by a newer one, running Windows 2003. So as you can see, it
it physically 2 separate machines. The Windows 2000 sever will eventually be
a member server in the domain.

I have searched the web (including MS Technet) for an upgrade path for my
scenario. However, looking through the web, it seems like everyone is
talking about upgrading Windows 2000 to Windows 2003 on the same machine,
but not different machines.

Does anyone has any article (or on the web) that can show me a case study
that match as close as possible to my scenario?

Thank you.

Best Regards,

WY

Hi,

You mean that after promoting the Win2k3 server to a DC and that's all? Will
all the user IDs and other stuff be replicated to the Win2k3 server? When
did MS made the upgrade path that easy?

BTW, will 2 DCs with one Win2k3 and Win2k be a problem in the same domain?

Best Regards,

That's not everything, but it is the biggest part.
2003 uses a different setup for Active Directory, so the
domain has to be upgraded to the 2003 version.
There is a commandline utility on the 2003 CD that does this.
When you promote the 2003 server, it will prompt you to what to do.
You will also want to transfer the master roles for the domain to the 2003
machine.
Look under "active directory" in the 2003 help and support. From there it's
"How To" then "manage operation master roles". It's not that difficult, just
time consuming. Also in the same section, look at the check lists for
"creating an additional domain controller". What you want to do is move
all the master roles to the 2003 server before taking the 2000 server off
line.
2 domain controllers is not a problem, you may have as many as you wish.
Active Directory is not like the old NT4 domain setup. All the users, etc
are stored in the active directory database, so yes, they will all be
transfered.

Before you start, it is a good idea to backup your servers, and read through
the help
and support sections.

Hi,

So what you mean is that I will need to upgrade my present DC to Windows
2003 first before I install the 2nd Windows 2003 server?

Thanks.

No, no and no.
You upgrade the "Domain", NOT the server.
There is a very big differance there.
Read the link I gave you.
You install 2003 on a "NEW" computer, leaving your 2000 server alone.
Bring the 2003 server online and make it a "member" server in the domain,
then promote it to a domain controller.
After ithe 2003 machine is a domain controller, (with the 2000 server also a
domain controller) you migrate the roles from the 2000 server to the 2003
server.
After the roles have beed moved to the 2003 machine, you can take the 2000
machine off line if you wish.
