Upgrading from Win2K to XP ... security problems

C

Carl Hilton

I am upgrading my offices Win2K machines to WinXP-Pro. Once that is
accomplished, I can no longer remotely access their registries. I am a
mamber of the DOMAIN ADMINs groups and the DOMAIN ADMINS group is a member
of the local machines' ADMINISTRATORS group. I have also noted that some of
my logon scripts that write to the HL_CURRENT USER keys.

What happened?

Remote access to the registry may fail for a number of reasons,
for example, the XP ICF firewall is on, or, the Remote Registry
service is stopped.

Login scripts run as the logging in user, and these have very
limited Write grants in the registry. You may need to examine
whether you are writing to the correct area, redesign, or else
loosen reg permissions on the necessary area. (you could do
this with a gpo).
