Upgrading from Win2000 Italian Version to XP Pro

K

ken

I was asked by a friend to upgrade a computer they received in Italy. It was
loaded with Win 2K Italian Version. I purchased an XP Pro upgrade package,
but after further review, I'm afraid this upgrade may not work. I don't want
to open the package and be out the money I paid for XP, but I want to do
the right thing. There are some applications already loaded (Norton
Internet Security, Open Office, some DVD related utilities).

Is there a way to fool it into allowing an update, and if not, Can the
upgrade package I bought create a new XP, as well as migrate the existing
applications to the new OS.

TIA

You'll need to purchase a "Full English Version" of Windows XP
and perform a "clean install". You cannot upgrade from one language
version to a different language version of Windows.

Will that wipe out what's on the disk right now.?

"Clean Install" - Yes. So backup first.
Find all installation media for other applications as well.. CD Keys, etc.
Backup Email, Contacts, Documents, Spreadsheets, Pictures, Drawings,
Databases, etc...

If you won't reformat the disk during setup a data would be intact. IIRC,
setup would save existed "Documents and Settings" data but you'd better
backup it to be on the safe side. You have to reinstall all the applications
indeed.
