Upgradeing from XP Home to XP Pro

Bought a new notebook with XP Home pre-loaded. I have an old notebook with XP
Pro and would like to reload XP Pro onto the new laptop. Q 1. How to do it
from a technology point of view and Q 2. How can I re-activate XP Pro and
re-register it on my new notebook?

What type of XP Pro is on your old laptop? If it is an OEM version
then the license for it is permanently locked to that old laptop and
cannot be legitimately transferred to another computer under any
circumstances.

If it is a retail version of XP Pro (came in a blue Microsoft box)
then that license can be transferred from computer to computer to
computer as you see fit, provided it is only ever installed on a
single computer at any point in time. So reformat the hard drive in
the old machine and then you are free to install it onto your new
computer.

Just insert the CD from the retail version of XP Pro into the laptop.
It should start up automatically and present you with a menu that
includes the upgrade option.

Note: If you want to "have your cake and eat it too" that is retain
the XP Pro on the old laptop and also have XP Pro on the new one then
your best course of action would be to contact the laptop manufacturer
*immediately* about exchanging your machine for an identical model
with XP Pro.

Good luck
