Upgraded from ME to XP now it is getting slower and slower.

I purchased an HP Pavilion 7950 with ME and at the time you could buy the upgrade from HP for $30.00 so I did. No problems with the install it went great but now two years later it is so slow I really want to reformat the hard drive and start over. Am I asking for trouble? Should I use the same disk recoverys that came with the computer or just go out and buy the full XP upgrade. Am I overlooking something? Signed slow and confused!

Try this before reloading:

Save your $, there is little benefit to buying a full version of
Windows XP.
As a minimum, the Windows ME that came with this computer is
permanently tied to this computer so you would make it an expensive
coaster.

To reload, you MAY need to install Windows ME and then upgrade to
Windows XP.
This is because some recovery CDs are not recognized as qualifying
media for upgrade.

The software should be fine, actually it's designed to work only o
pavilion equitment. You might go to run, type:cm
in cmd type:CHKDSK C: /R agree to restart then type:EXI
Restart computer for it to run.Replacing the drive is fine, use the ol
as a slave drive and move xps paging file to that, youll be increasing memor
at the same time.

The retail versions of XP have more utilities to fix and repair XP than the
oem disks. But if you only need to reinstall the operating system , the oem
will be just as good. Do you have HP installed software on the oem disks ?
The software that you have install on the computer over the years , plays a
big part in the slowing down of the computer. Try putting in some more ram
and defragging more often for increased efficiency . Jym

Hi vanvs0702,

Have you checked that you don't have malware installed using Ad-aware
or Spybot?

See the following articles:

310560 How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560

The msconfig utility is especially useful, as it lets you disable any
programs that run automatically at start up. You could try disabling
all non- windows programs here and testing the boot velocity, then
enable them one or two at a time to find out which causes the slow
boot.

Hope this helps.
