"upgrade" XP to XP Home

Slight problem. We had a PC running Win 98 SE that was experienceing al
kinds of glitches. I thought if I upgraded to XP that the problem might be
solved. Before going out and buying a copy I thought I would load a copy of
XP that I already had, being used on another PC, just to see if it solved the
problems. It did, but now I've purchased an upgrade copy of XP Home to
install, but a message comes up saying that this installation in not
upgradable in this manner (or words to that effect). The copy of XP that I
had trial loaded was XP Pro. What can I do now? Thanks in advance for any
help.

Never think installing a new OS will fix issues.
That's like thinking a new coat of paint OVER the rust (without prep work)
will stop the rust.

You can go buy Windows XP Professional (retail or upgrade) or you can format
the PC and start from scratch.

In your case - I recommend the latter - that machine is in dire need of a
clean install.

You could format the drive to get rid of the trial XP Pro. Then try
the upgrade installation. You will need the Win98CD at some poiunt in
the upgrade installation.

Good luck, jimbo
