uI am currently running Win XP Home edition. I would like to upgrade to Win
XP Pro. Could I do this with the Win XP Pro Upgrade software, or do I have
to buy the full version? Thanks

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro will not affect your current programs or files
if you use the following procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program and then defrag your drive.

Yes, you can upgrade XP Home to Professional. There is no special
upgrade version just for this, but the regular XP Professional
Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't say so on the box).

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

Hi,

The upgrade version is all you need.

Thanks for all the replies. I want to upgrade because I am running a home
network and think it will be easier to reconnect etc if necessary.
Thanks again

Only needed if you are running a domain. Otherwise XP Home works fine
for home networks.

No it's not easier. This is a good example of why you need to
investigate the differences carefully before upgrading from Home
to Professional. Your home network will undoubtedly be
peer-to-peer and will work identically on either Home or
Professional. There's no advantage of Professional for this,

The only real networking difference between the two is that
Professional can join a domain and Home can not. But since
domains are normally used only in large corporations (and some
colleges) that difference is meaningless for almost all home
users.

Save your money and don't do this.

Upgrade is fine. Run it from the present system. enter Install,
continue with Upgrade

Make sure that yo do the upgrade with the correct version of XP Pro. If
your XP Home has had SP1/SP2 installed, you need to use the same version (or
higher) of XP Pro.

XP Home ---> XP Pro, XP Pro SP1, XP Pro SP2
XP Home SP1 --> XP Pro SP1, XP Pro SP2
XP Home SP2 --> XP Pro SP2

There is the critical information I was looking for... If you have XP Home
SP2 you can only upgrade to XP Pro SP2.. which makes sense, since the service
pack is more like an upgrade in itself.

There are a couple of considerations that might be relevant:

1. In a peer-to-peer network situation Windows XP Home only allows 5
concurrent logins to a shared resource whereas XP Pro allows 10.

So if you have more than 5 computers that will be active at any one
time on the network then that might be a reason to consider moving to
XP Pro.

2. If you are concerned about restricting certain users on the
network from accessing certain files or folders on other computers
then XP Pro might be worthwhile because it is easier to configure file
and folder level security settings. It can be done in XP Home, but
only if you reboot into Safe Mode in order to configure the
permissions.

Good luck
