Upgrade to HT processor?

J

Jim Kent

The price of the 3.06GHz/533 processor has fallen to $250, so it looks
like it's time to upgrade from my 1.8GHz non-HT processor.

Here's my question: with W2K Pro, is it possible to substitute the
processor without a W2K reinstall or update? The change to the
processor makes me wonder if the HAL is different. If an update is
required, will the intsallation update (where the o/s
updates/refreshes itself, including the HAL, but without needing
reinstallation of applications) process work?

Thanks!

You can do it, but you should re-apply your service pack afterwards.

Actually, this isnt entirely correct.

You can drop in the new processor, provided that the motherboard supports
HT.

Then, you need to update your "machine type" within the device manager to an
MP or SMP HAL. You will be asked for an i386 directory of the latest service
pack that was installed on the machine.

Then your OS will recognise that it has 2 processors. Be prepared though...
you wont see a 100% increase in power, as HT processors operate at the
performance rate of approximate 1.3 processors... so you may only see a 30%
gain.
