Upgrade RAM from 2GB to 4GB

No wonder things are slow...you have too many pgms running at
once. Holy moley, I wouldn't have near what you have at
start-up. I only have 1.0 GB of memory and my machine is fast.

Don't know why AGP is disabled. What is it? How do I get to it?

And what progs do you think are the problem?

Spyware doctor could be your problem. If you let it do automatic scans
it will bring your whole computer to a dead stop.
The best thing to do when your computer is crawling is to open Windows
Task Manager click on the Process tab and in the CPU column see what is
eating up your processor. then you can right click on it and click on
end process. See how that improves things. If it works either get rid of
that program or reset the settings for it.
Sometimes a programs auto update will do the same thing. That is why I
always manually update.

I also notice that you have Adobe Reader8 on your computer. I got rid of
it as foxit reader does just as well and I had the same problem that
you described. I went into Task manager and Adobe Readers update was
using 100% of my cpu. got rid of it and no problems. I have almost as
many programs running as you do ( I know because my son complains) but
my computer zips along with 1gig of ram. Its not so much how many
progams, although it can be a problem, but which programs and what you
are letting them do.

Hi: Adobe Ver 8 is a bad actor. If I use the damned thing, it
will try and download the update and use up my bandwidth as I am
on dial-up. I DON'T want the update unless it is on my
initiative. I have discontinued the sneaky download three times
already. I can't seem to be able to head it off and have tried
mightily.

It's easy to control if you use a firewall that can keep outbound
connections in check. The XP firewall is completely oblivious to
outbound connections.

Any reason you don't change the update check preferences?

"FGGH": I wouldn't even venture an opinion unless I sitting in
front of your computer. Only you and/or more experienced
operators should tackle that.

There are lots of programs that try to load all or part of their
programs on start-up. A good many are NOT needed and they take
up memory. Some Anti-Virus pgms are way over-zealous in their
default set-ups and can be re-tuned for faster ops. Same goes
for AV pgms with mail scanning. Same for the anti-spyware
pgms...some of them won't let you do anything because they have
to bloody well scan everything before they turn it over to you.
A neighbor used McAfee System protection which ran and ran and
ran which just about drove her nuts.

If you have a local and dependable service shop or even your
friendly Dell support, phone them and get some free advice.

Cheers...

Doug W.

p.s. you have some software that I wouldn't mind having but also
some that I would deep six.

Google AGP. Lots of information there...you may need a service
techie to solve that one.

I got rid of the BHO with Spybot - Search and destroy. I knew

To the OP:

I suggest you go here: http://www.mlin.net/ and download Startup
Control Panel.

Download it, run it, it installs a new Startup icon in your Control
Panel. The module will let you see everything that starts up on your
system and let you remove items. One of the nice features is that you
can disable items without deleting them, so if you disable something
that you find you need, putting it back in place is a simple click
away.

Remove anything that looks like an application that you don't really
need starting up. Lots of manufacturers these days try to get their
programs in the startup areas so they will look fast when you kick
them off but it just chews up your system for no good reason.
