Upgrade notebook from XP Home to XP Pro

Purchased a COMPAQ Presario R3000 notebook, with AMD Athlon 64, preloaded
with Windows XP Home and have not yet gone through their software setup
procedures.

I'd like to be able to run IIS to test web-based applications, and
understand I need XP Pro to do so. I have an MSDN Universal subscription, so
have the XP Pro disk (or can download the copy with slipstreamed SP2).

Can I use that CD/DVD to upgrade from Home to Pro without destroying the
special drivers that COMPAQ installed for the touchpad and USB support on
this notebook? I note that their "Startup Guide" advises _against_
installing a retail Operating System for the reason that the USB may no
longer operate properly.

I also note that this computer did not seem to include a "factory recovery
disk" as did my previous COMPAQ notebooks. I presume, after going through
the software setup, I will have to create a CD/DVD backup/restore. Can
anyone verify that?

Thanks,

Larry Linson

Hi Larry,

The MSDN CD will work to upgrade the system.
I would recommend downloading and installing the SP2 version instead
and using it.

As for the restore disk, you should check with Compaq.

loading and installing the SP2 version

Thanks, Bert. I'll get busy on, first, setting up the Win XP Home software
and getting a backup, and then, on upgrading, and backing up again.

The Home version that came preloaded is SP2.
