Upgrade Installation

I purchased the Ultimate Upgrade version. I also purchased the 'Family
license' in order to install Vista on my laptop. The latter only provides the
Premium version. I have Ultimate RC2 currently installed on my laptop and the
upgrade version will not allow me to install Premium over Ultimate. Is there
an easier way of upgrading other than unistalling Ultimate RC2 then
reinstalling XP? Thanks.

Yes, install Vista and don't put in the product code. Install it again
and do put in the product code.

No, no easier way. You are using the keywords Ultimate and Premium. More
relevant to your scenario are the keywords Ultimate and Home. No Home
version can upgrade any Business or higher version. Primarily due to the
Business and Ultimate's ability to join domains. More network capable.
Therefore, no "Home" version is an "upgrade" to Business or Ultimate, in
Microsoft's definition of the word.

I'm back!

Well, no one told me that in order to uninstall Vista I would have to clean
install XP, thus having to go through the tedious tasks of restoring
programs, files, etc.

Isn't there a workaround out there to circumvent this?

Thanks.

Sorry, there is not way that I've ever heard of. Once the deed it done,
there is no easy way back. Upgrading (or changing) an OS is a really big
deal. Probably the one big mistake MS made was to give so many people the
impression that upgrading the OS is no more than any other program update.
That is obviously not true. Never has been.

No.If you want to go from Vista to older system back, of course you will
have to do all from the beginning. Tht is the default as XP has no backup
built in for that kind of tasks.

You could image your partitions with tools like DriveImage or Acronis to get
your working system resored within minutes. Talking of XP here.

IN Vista Ultimate,Business and Enterprise one could take Complete-PC-Backup
for that purpose.

No one told you? Well that certainly changes things - it invokes the
special procedure only for those who weren't told. Did you ask or even
consider before you installed RC1 how this would work?

In any event the answer is the same. Doesn't matter how many times you ask.

Did you make an image of the XP installation before doing the RC1 install?
If so restore the image.

RC1 is not a qualifying product for use of an upgrade. The only way to go
from RC1 to Vista through an upgrade in place is to use a full retail
version of Vista Ultimate. Otherwise you will have to do a clean install of
XP to the SP2 level, activate, then do the upgrade to Vista with the VHP
upgrade version. No need to install apps in XP, better to install after
upgrading to Vista.

To ease the transition run the Windows Easy Transfer Utility (WET) on the
RC1 installation to backup data and settings, then after Vista is installed,
use WET to bring them back in.

OK Rock, I'm ready to take the upgrade plunge! I've got WET and will transfer
current Vista settings as you suggestion. One final question. In doing a
clean install of XP to the SP2 level do I just install over the current RC1
installation?
