Upgrade from Win98SE to XP

Can I just upgrade on top of Win98SE? Or must I reformat the whole
drive and then install? I'm afraid to ask what the best way is for a
clean system :-o

Yes you can - and I would do it that way in the first instance. You can
always go back and do a clean install if things do not work out. MAke
sure that your hardware is adequate - at *least* a 350 MHz CPU, more
than 128MB RAM - and preferably 256 or more. Then Read Gary Woodruff's
article on upgrading to XP at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

To do it, run the XP CD from the existing system - take Install and
continue with Upgrade. Even to do a clean install you only need an
upgrade CD - for that you would change Upgrade to New Install. When it
asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the current
partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage
