Upgrade from W98...HELP

Question #1

I have a Compaq W98 PC which I updated and copied W98 from
the original 4GB HD to a 30GB HD last year. I no longer
have the 'boot CD' provided by Compaq. Can I still buy and
install just the Windows XP Upgrade or do I have to do a
clean install?

Question #2

Software That Does Not Support Windows XP

The Upgrade program found 4 programs in the Control Panel
which I need to remove. However, they are NOT LISTED in
the Add/Remove Programs listing. How can I otherwise
remove them? They are as follows:

- Compaq Diagnostics
- Disc Detector
- Java Plug-In
- NVIDIA NView Desktop Mgr

One last thing.....I completely built a new PC last
year.....I basically copied the 4GB HD with W98 to the
30GB HD......Junked the Compaq and started with a new box,
motherboard, etc....I am not sure if this will impact
whether I can just 'upgrade' or 'start from
stratch'............Thanks much......George

As long as you upgrade, if for some reason you have to
reformat the upgrade cd will ask for a qualified CD
Win98/ME/NT/2000.

After you copied the 4 to the 30, did you boot up the PC
and did W98 come up and work? If so then upgrade.

It will probably work for that first install, but if you ever want to format
and reinstall, you'll need some sort of qualifying product so the upgrade
will work. Even if you had the Compaq restore cds, they wouldn't work, you
need a "real" copy of a previous OS.
