Upgrade from Non-Genuine.

Hello, my name is Kevin and I'm thinking of purchasing Vista soon. I ran the
upgrade advisor, and it recommends Vista Buisness, but I'm getting Home
Premium. Anyways, my question today is:

Can I upgrade to Windows Vista from a Non-Genuine Windows XP Professional?

I've searched and I can't find the answer anywhere! Thankyou for assistance!

No, you cannot; and yes, this answer is everywhere.

I beg to differ.

My copy of XP was Non Genuine & I upraded to Vista with no problem.

Well I couldn't find it; but WHY NOT? They're making me pay an extra $50 for
no apparent reason. So just because of 25 friggin numbers, Microsoft is
making me pay an extra $50! That is BULLCRAP.

Well that's good, but I MUST MAKE A CORRECTION;
I live in Canada, so instead of + $50, they're making Me pay an extra
$100!!!! THIS IS BULLCRAP.

Well I will try to upgrade anyways, maybe it's just Microsoft staff telling
you that you can't to make a couple extra million.

No, that is piracy, you stated you have "Non-Genuine".
There is no price break for upgrading pirated copies, there never has been
and there probably never will be.
Buy the full version of Vista Home Premium and use Windows Easy Transfer to
save your data and settings.

Just go to NewEgg and buy an OEM version. It is cheaper than the retail
upgrade and does not require giving up your XP license.

It's not Piracy when I buy it From Future Shop in 2003 is it? I didn't know
that was a crime. I buy from Future Shop, install it, and come 2005,
Microsoft rips me and thousands of other people who bought XP before 2005.

And since I live in Canada, I must pay an extra $113 for Vista "Full".

The above sounds like BULLCRAP to me.

But an OEM version cannot do an in place upgrade. Hard to know what exactly
the OP was asking.

Would you do an in place upgrade? I have Xp legit now and when I go to Vista
I plan to format the hard drive and start over. I may be wrong but I just do
not trust upgrades. I do not want any chance of a problem in one Os to hang
around in the next. I want to know when I start with a new OS that the only
problems I have are related to the new OS and not a preexisting problem that
did not get fixed.

If you bought XP at the Future Shop then it is most likely genuine and
something has messed up your system to make it appear non-genuine. The most
common cause of this is a bogus repair shop reinstalling XP and being to
lazy to do the job properly so they install an image of a pirate copy. Have
you ever had the computer in for a repair? Does the key that was used for
the install match the key for the copy you bought? You can download a
program here to see what key was used during the install.

Oh contraire..... You certainly can do an in place upgrade with an OEM
version. I did this very thing last week. I bought a copy of Vista Ultimate
OEM (Full) and upgraded my XP Home OEM system without any problems.

The problem with an upgrade is not Vista going in clean, it does. It is
installed as a block copy so there is no residue of the old OS left around
to cause problems like it could with XP with it's file copy installation
method. After Vista is installed the drivers, programs and data are then
brought in. This is where things can get messy. If you properly prepped
the system by removing problematic hardware and their drivers, and any apps
that could be problematic, and there is no malware on the system, then the
upgrade should go fine.

I did a clean install for this installation, because I wanted to keep XP as
a dual boot (no printer driver in Vista for my older NEC laser printer),
though I did do some upgrades during Beta testing that went fine. This
install is Vista Ultimate full edition retail. Once I get the printer issue
sorted, and don't need XP, I may try doing an upgrade on that installation
(with a different Vista license that I have available). It is rock solid in
XP so I would be interested in how the upgrade would go.

You're the first and only one who's said they were able to do an in place
upgrade with an OEM version.

No, you CAN NOT "upgrade" from XP Pro to Vista Home. That is a downgrade.
The OP will ahve to upgrade to Vista Business or do a clean install of Vista
Home.

I've seen one other poster claim this, too.

Yes I just read the post by Kris. I sure wish we had some hard info on
this. I may just stop replying to some of these posts, I don't know what is
true at this point.
