Upgrade from GForce 2 MX to ????

I currently have a Nvidia GForce 2 MX200 AGP card with 32 MB. My MB is a MSI
845 Pro4 with an AGP2 slot 4x. It looks like most of the new boards are APG
8x. I've been very happy with Nvidia, having used an original TNT many years
ago. Can't upgrade the MB right now. What would be a good card to upgrade to
using my current MB?

FPShooters are my favorite games.

System is:
Win 98 1st
MSI 845 Pro4
256 MB hopefully soon to be 512

Need more info? please ask.

I did a Google search but really didn't find if 8x boards will work for me.

TIA,1

The newer faster video cards, even that work at 4X as all 8X cards do,
generally do NOT support Win 98 1st. Time for a newer OS.

Unfortunately, I can't up the OS at this time. W98 is running very stable at
this time. Any ideas what might be a good card for this system?

Win98SE would open up a lot of possibilities (WDM drivers). I have seen
copies of the upgrade CD (the version that patched Win98 Gold to SE) for
modest prices ($20, I think) at computer shows.

However, if you're sticking with 98 Gold...

At a guess, you can probably use an ATI Radeon 9800 card (avoid the SE
models). ATI (www.ati.com) recommends the Catalyst 4.3 drivers with 98 Gold.

www.newegg.com lists a few 9800 Pro models. Here's an example for $126.50
with free shipping:

(This is only of interest if you're in the US.) That's a fair size piece of
change, but if you wish to play FPS games, the better the, er, better.

If you had 98SE, I'd suggest an nVidia Geforce 6600 for roughly the same
price.

I have no personal experience with the above. I've been on XP for several
years, and recommend it.
