upgrade from 98SE to XP

Hi,I hope someone can help me. I am trying to upgrade
from win 98Se to XP. When installing it stays at '79
minutes' left for hours. When I run the compatability
program, I get a fatal error saying 'setup cannot create a
temporary folder. Setup cannot continue'. I'm not very
handy with a PC, so any help I could get would be
appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you run the Upgrade Advisor first?

Did it have any compatibility issues?

Better find answersto those questions first.

I get the message I referred to when I run the upgrade
advisor. I have quite a few folders & files under
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP Can I manually delete all those - maybe a
space issue? Or is there some sort of 'write permission'
I need to set?

Thanks.

Temp files can always be deleted unless they are currently in use.
When I get a hang like yours, I shut down and remove all hardware cards
except the keyboard, mouse and video. It is a basic troubleshooting
technique that gives you a solid base to figure out what is the cause of the
problem. If setup completes, do not activate if prompted until you
successfully reinstall all the hardware you removed.
