updating Windows XP computer not used since 2003

I have a Dell Dimension bought in 2003 that lived in its box until last
November. It works fine, but I can't get XP SP2 to download because my
connection takes 8 hrs for the download, and it times out from the server.
My internet connection is ATT.net dialup. I'm running Norton AV. My biggest
concern is security because I have gotten a virus on that other machine
called Bloodhound.Packed.9 even though the NAV was updated and working. I
suspect it "sneaked in" through a hole in the XP that might have been patched.

My question is: How can I download SP2 to a CD on this computer at work
that's connected by DSL, bring it home, and install it on the home machine?
Does SP2's most recent version have all the updates I'll need to secure my
home machine? If not, is there a place where I can get whatever else I need,
ideally in one fell swoop, to update - also downloaded to CD for transfer. I
also need to update Office 2003.

Demmpa,

I followed your advice and downloaded the XP SP2 developer package. It is
more than I need, but the Microsoft Update/Download site won't let me just
download a copy of the basic SP because it is already installed on my
DSL-connected machine. It appears the only option they want to give me is to
order the CD, which involves a 4 - 6 wk wait (preposterous in today's
business environment) and a shipping and handling fee. I don't get their
thinking, but they are smarter than I am.

I'll try installing it tomorrow.

On the humorous side, you waited 3 years to fire-up your system and
a wait time of 4-6 weeks is "preposterous."

There is no "basic SP"!
SP2 is SP2, not more or less.
SP2 for Network Installation is whole SP2,
if you use MS Update, it´s only download that
the computer nead.

when you install "SP2 for Network Installation"
it only install that the computer nead.

Demmpa,

I thought that since the SP2 download for developers was so much larger than
the other one on the XP download center page, it must have stuff I didn't
need. Anyway, I downloaded it as you suggested, but now I can't get my CD
writer to write it to a CD I can take to the other machine.
