Updating Defender Beta 2 to Latest Version

I am currently running:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1441.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1525.2

Windows 2000 Professional SP-4
Windows Update disable by the corp. policies.
Novel v4.91.1.20050819

Windows Defender says that anewer version is available for download.

When I download the newer version (1.1.1347.x) and install it on top of my
existing installation, at the end of the installation I get a message that
Windows Defender service (windefend) cannot be started and that I check my
priviledges that I can start the service. I can "Retry" or "Cancel" at that
point. "Retry" comes back wqith the same message. "Cancel" will cancel the
installation.
While that message is displayed I can go to Service in Computer Management
and get properties for the Windows Defender service. I change the "Log On" to
"This Account" from "Local System" and I enter the credentials for my
account. That will still not start the service. But when I change back to
"Local System" the Windows Defender service can now be started and the
installation of the newest version of Windows Defender Beta 2 (1.1.1347.x)
will complete and everything seems OK.
However if I reboot the computer I now get a message with error 0x800106ba
saying that the Windows Defender service could not start because it could not
find the file specified. No specific filename is given and I could not find
any in the Windows Event Logs.

I see that others are mentioning this error (0x800106ba) but my searches
thru these newsgroups do not find a real solution. I see some suggestions
about getting the latest critical updates from Windows Update. Since the
company disabled Windows Update that cannot be done. Is there a specific
update that I can download manually and install to solve this?

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.
I would also recommend: Download and save to the desktop. Close all open
IE windows, and any open Windows Defender UI window before running the
downloaded installer.

Hi "Fuzzy John"

Sorry, you ask for a manual download.

Try this: Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove programs, Windows
Defender, Change, Updªte.

OR

Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove programs, Windows
Defender, Click for support informatiºn, and follow the prºmpts.

Good luck

Hi Engel,

Unfortunately neither of those methods solve the problem. This problem only
happens on the one computer that I mentioned in the first post. All other
computers I am running Defender on are OK and up to date.
