updating database

D

Don

What it is saying is, to get it to give you a better error (One that you
might be able to under stand)

To see the true error, open the hidden folder /_fpclass/ and edit the
fpdbrgn1.inc file

At about line 19, change :

fp_DEBUG = False

to :

fp_DEBUG = True

BTW: Did you try the easy fix download?
Worked here...
I am using FrontPage 2003 and Access 2000
but have not run into the same problem you have.

Hope This Helps

|
| I am not seeing any error messages. In fact that is one of my worries,

I

Neither of my fpdgrgn1.inc or fpdgrgn2.inc files have an instances of
fp_DEBUG anywhere. However, my fpdbform.inc has 2 (yes two) of them (and it
declares them twice e.g. 2 dim statements etc). That file is also approx
twice the size of the equivalent file from FP2K (e.g. 4.4k vs. 2.9k). If I
try to use the FP2K version of the inc file, after publish I look at my
fpclass dir, and "lo and behold" my 2.9k inc file has magically become a 4.4k
inc file.

Also, once again, when I press submit, there are no error messages
whatsoever ... everything looks fine (c.f. the thread you were kind of enough
to reference, where they speak specifically of an unintelligible error
message which apparently they are trying to make more intelligible ... or
whatever ...).

Just for “fun†I set them to True anyway, and no surprises, the results
occur (i.e. form processing looks perfect, no error messages, confirm page
arrived as expected, mdb modified date/time consistent with submit date, …
but nothing in DB!)

G

Guest

OK I got something ... before when I replaced the FP03 fpdbforms.inc it
simply resulted in FP03 overwriting my "fix" with the same FP03 inc file that
I started with. Somehow or another, on further fiddling, I managed to get
the FP2K version of this inc file to "hold", then on publish it now does show
an error message (for the first time) and that error message was just about
clear enough to implement a fix to the db, and now it is working as expected.

Now, it is our understanding that many others in many other locations, and
over many months, have been struggling with this. We upgraded to FP03 4 days
ago, so why is it that MS is still distributing something that has a known
(though obscure) fix (and so could have saved us 8 man days of expenses for
just this one of many FP03 quirks).

Thank you for that, and we may consider those avenues. However, I note:

1) Several of the problems we have reported are of a serious code bug
nature, and apparently have been known about for sometime, yet nothing has
been done.

2) Another issue is exemplified by the following: in 1997 one of our staff
had written to MS (via many avenues and to many locations) that the animated
page transitions in Office97/PowerPoint were triggering a pathological
reaction since he suffers from a mild form of epilepsy. Since the animation
cannot be turned off, his life is a misery whenever MSPP is required.

Here it is almost 8 years latter, and guess what .. is there a fix for this?
NO!

This is only one example of many, and as you may imagine such experiences do
thwart motivation, since there appears to be no benefits, but there are costs.

Thanks, we know that and have had if off for years. Importantly, it does not
appear to effect MSPP, and perhaps you would like to try that yourself and

| Thank you for that, and we may consider those avenues. However, I note:
|
| 1) Several of the problems we have reported are of a serious code bug
| nature, and apparently have been known about for sometime, yet nothing has
| been done.
|
| 2) Another issue is exemplified by the following: in 1997 one of our
staff
| had written to MS (via many avenues and to many locations) that the
animated
| page transitions in Office97/PowerPoint were triggering a pathological
| reaction since he suffers from a mild form of epilepsy. Since the
animation
| cannot be turned off, his life is a misery whenever MSPP is required.
|
| Here it is almost 8 years latter, and guess what .. is there a fix for
this?
| NO!
|
| This is only one example of many, and as you may imagine such experiences
do
| thwart motivation, since there appears to be no benefits, but there are
costs.

Read-Only doesn't apply to html pages when open in FP, unless changed in FP2003.

Thanks for that, though I have noticed the fpdbforms.inc file is "dynamic"
and appears to change (I presumed as a result of forms/dbs being added/edited
etc). If I make it read-only, wont that prevent its ability to update?

Don

Yes, But the syntax is (well will be) the same / as long as you are using
access 2000. The problem is that FrontPage 2003 will create an Access 2003
database code and then rewrite the code. If you are going to modify the DB
then do it in access 2000. Import (back to FrontPage) and then verify the
query.

I know that the fpdblib.inc, fpdbrgn1.inc, and fpdbrgn2 can all be "read
only" as for the fpdbforms.inc (I don't use that) I don't see where this
would be a problem either. (making it read only)

The only other solution (as I see it) is to upgrade to Access 2003 (not what
I would want to hear)

Have you tried open this file or any of the files in _fpclass in FP and then making a change after
you have made it read-only? If so, you will see that FP will saving any changes made to any the file
that it can open regardless if the file is marked read-only. I just tested this in FP2003.

Also you will notice that the read-only attribute have been removed when FP saves the file.

Don

Well, You are right! Kind of blows that theory out of the water...
Then the only thing to do is upload the file (the right one for access 2000)
and then mark the ones in the local web as "Don't Publish".

Don
===================
| Have you tried open this file or any of the files in _fpclass in FP and
then making a change after
| you have made it read-only? If so, you will see that FP will saving any
changes made to any the file
| that it can open regardless if the file is marked read-only. I just tested
this in FP2003.
