updating a template in use

What happens to existing files using a document template if I replace the
template file with a new file of the same name?

The new template has updated styles. Standard sections are also provided,
with standard footers, headers, etc. These differ slightly from the ones in
the original file.

I can predict that the standard sections won't suddenly appear in existing
documents, but will there be any unexpected effects on styles in the existing
documents?

Thanks,

Substituting a new version of the template will have zero effect on existing
documents unless "Automatically update document styles" is checked in Tools
| Templates and Add-ins. For more, see

Thanks. I don't think any of our users has that checkbox checked.

Now I have to figure out how to remove outdated templates without destroying
docs based on them. That's what they told me to do, anyway.

I think I'll just mark them DO NOT USE instead (as text in the document).
