Updates vanish after downloading ??

M

Mike Fields

OK, this one has me puzzled -- several machines exhibit the
same pattern. I have updates set to "Notify me but don't
automatically download and install them". Machine
running XP Pro, SP2, most patches installed. I get the
notification that new updates are available on the taskbar
with the yellow icon and balloon popup. Click the balloon,
select the updates to download, system downloads them
(mouse over shows percentage complete of download).
When download finishes, it used to popup a notification
that they were ready to install. Now, it just goes away.
I can go to the update site and download the updates
(and often when I do, then the balloon pops back up
saying the updates are ready to install). If I just wait, or
log out, back in again, no notification the updates are
ready to install. The machine gets regularly scanned for
junk/viruses (F-Protect AV - up to date, Spybot, Adaware).

They download, just don't let me know they are ready to
install -- any idea what is "broken" ?? When I look in the
event log, I have found it before where it says downloads
were completed and are waiting to be installed, but I am
never notified they are ready to install.

Hi Mike
This is strange - your link shows a post by you on 9 May at 19:21, yet I
cannot see that post in my lists, on that day or time.
Perhaps explains why no response was received.
Can you still see your orig, post - assuming it was in this group.
Did a Find and still no trace

It's possible that the updates WERE installed - you can check by going to
Control Center - ADD OR REMOVE programs. After it generates the list the
updates that have been installed are listed at the bottom of the list. Might
help-I don't know

Thanks for your help

Yes, I could still see it, however, when I posted it originally, it
was to the xp.security_admin group only -- on my followup
today, I added the xp.general group to it - thought someone
there might have an idea.

I will go back and do some more checking, but last time I looked
in the event log, it showed they had been downloaded and were
"ready to be installed". If I go to the update site, it finds the same
ones available, so it looks like they were not installed. I will do
some more checking and see if I can find any other clues --
what I have selected on the updates is the radio button for
"Notify me but don't automatically download or install them"
which in the past, I would click the download, it would
download them then pop-up another message they were
ready to install.

OK, just to add to the entertainment factor, tonight's
"ready to download" behaved as it should. Click the
download button, when it was done, another balloon
pops up with the "ready to install" routine. Install
behaved as it should. No warnings or other unusual
things in the event log. Showed when BITS was started,
showed they were downloaded and ready and showed
they were installed. Sigh.

Hello again Mike
No - it is not listed in my General Posts - cant even find it in the 'Find'
Are you saying that you can see this May 9 19:21 post in General.
The actual post of the link you gave shows no 'To' info.
Perhaps that's why

He only cross-posted on his 'reply'. The original was to
ms.pu.wxp.security_admin.

Yep - I think he may know that now - I didn't spot that - must be more
observant next time. Although he did say he sent the post twice - once to
security then to security plus here in general.

Correct -- posted initially to security_admin then cross-posted
the next day to both security_admin AND general (when no one
made any comments in the security group -- I had sort of
expected someone to have some comment!).
