Windows Vista Updates install spasmodically

Problem with Basic Vista & updates - Windows update only installs some updates, not all. It installs current updates, but if we press the close down icon which indicates updates are waiting to start, it will report that around 13 updates are due, but then automatic close down often goes on forever at which time it then won't either install or close down and we have to press the off button til it does (this has gone on overnight and for hours, so no point in letting it run). Has anyone got a fix for this? Driving us mad!
