Updates during shutdown?!

I have not recently downloaded any updates from MS, however, every time I
shutdown the PC it gives a message about "Updates are being installed. (1 of
3)." It then states "Do not turn off or unplug your computer, it will turn
off automatically" or something similar to that. These messages do not
appear until after the desktop is gone and the shutdown dialog box is up.
This never changes from update 1 to 2 and it just seems to sit there. I
cannot find any info on this in the KB or Inet. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

See the posting entitled, "AUTOMATIC UPDATE STALLS ON SHUTDOWN" under the
"Windows Update" heading. There is a solution there but does not seem to
work for me so far.

Good luck!

This has taken effect on my machine. I have SP2 but no recent updates that I
know about. The machine fails to shut down and has to be manually stopped.
Strange? Anybody know what is going on?

Problem solved - simply click on the update shield in the bottom task bar and
initiate the update before you shutdown. THe update is a security update for
SP2. once it runs the shield goes away and you can shutdown as normal. must
be a glitch that locks up when it runs itself in the shutdown sequence.

I tried to update by clicking the shield but I wasn't able to do so or,
perhaps, I became impatient.
After a couple times, I went to the start screen and clicked on Windows
Update and installed theupdates.
Seems to be working fine now.

Glad I found this thread...I thought it may have been a virus at
first.

I have Automatic Updates turned on (SP2), and started having the same
problem yesterday. B/c AutoUpdate was set to install patches
automatically, I didn't see any shield that you mentioned. However, I
did a manual Windows Update, and that seems to have alleviated the
problem.
