updated bios and sp1

Today I updated the BIOS on my Sony Vaio because I was
told the latest BIOS cures a freeze problem that affects
Vaios after they have installed XP SP1.

However, within minutes of updating the BIOS the Vaio
froze again.

After a BIOS update do I need to reinstall Windows XP
and/or SP1 to fully cure the problem?

Will re-installing Windows XP do anything if I am using
the recovery CDs that came with the Vaio - they just seem
to copy an image to the laptop HDD?

Could I just uninstall and reinstall SP1?

Thanks for any advice...

Updating the BIOS does not usually require a re-installation of the
operating system. I've done it on more than one system many times over the
years.

Using the recovery CD that came with the system will return it to how it was
when you bought it. Everything added/updated since will be gone.

The only way to do a repair install is with an original, full version of XP
as bought in a store. (Now you know the pitfalls of buying a system with
pre-installed software.)

What has Sony told you about the problem? What is going to happen when SP2
comes out in a few days?
